Finding a good link exchange can be a challenge. There are hidden bumps and potholes that can make it even tougher. Understanding how to navigate over and around those bumps and potholes requires skill and knowledge. Because not everyone has the skill or knowledge there are many companies that offer services to aid you in finding link exchanges.
Some companies offer services where they go and find link exchanges for you. Some of these companies take their client base and link them to each other and charge very high prices for the service. Some companies actually go out and attempt to find link exchanges for you.
The link exchange companies that use their database may not have a broad enough client base and therefore end up linking clients to each other without consideration for visitors. They do this only for the search engines. This type of link exchange service is extremely poor quality.
The link exchange companies that actually do real searches to find sites that offer link exchanges may or may not look at the structure used on or in the links directory or links page. If they fail to examine the site they recommend or seek a link exchange from it could harm your site.
The company you choose must be as concerned about your business as they are about theirs. One way you can tell how good the company is would be to examine their link exchange habits. If their link exchange pages are poorly managed then you need to go elsewhere.
Over the past year or so, many services have popped up to become clearinghouses for link exchange requests. The majority of these services are good. Regrettably, not all the subscribers are understand what they should be doing.
Currently, there are two link exchange sites I participate in. One is less active than the other and unfortunately neither had brought me good link exchanges. Now, why would this be? Surely you jest. Like you should be I'm very particular about who I trade links with. If their link exchange pages are not set up like mine are on the Merchant Metrix Shopping Cart then I won't trade links with them.
Another problem with link exchange sites surrounds the fact that the person you exchange links with might remove your link after you have viewed it. This would like you hanging in the wind with a non-reciprocated link. They gain favor while you gain nothing.
With a little knowledge of link exchange you can easily avoid the potholes and bumps. Gaining helpful link exchanges can help you acquire new customers and favor in the search engines. Remember people and search engines can't find you unless they know about you; link exchanges offer so much and should be used properly.
